The tools that you will need for the job are tile cutter, tile saw, grout spreader, spirit level, tile nibblers, adhesive spreader, tile cutting jig and homemade gauge stick. It is important that before you start make sure that the walls are clean, sound and dry. The surface should be flat with no trace of wall papering and coat of any flaking paint. Start plotting the position of tiles on the wall with the use of a gauge stick.
How you set out the walls will determine the size and shape of your bathroom. Temporarily nail a thin guide batten to the wall marking the bottom of the lowest row of tiles. Then use the spirit level to make sure it is horizontal. In bathrooms it is important to use waterproof tile adhesive for areas that will come into contact with water. Form horizontal ridges in the adhesive using the toothed edge of the spreader. Position the first tile in the right angle and if it doesn't have a lugs, place plastic spacers so that there is enough space for the grouting. Excess adhesive must be cleaned out with the use of a damp cloth.
After you have competed installation on the main area, the next thing that you have to tackle is the border tiles. Cutting the boarder tiles is needed to fit in the gap between the adjacent walls. Tiling around pipes, you should try and set them out and cut a semi circle from the edges of two adjacent tiles. When grouting use a waterproof grout for any bath or shower. A silicone sealant is best to seal the gap between the shower tray or bathtub and the wall.

First, make sure you have enough tiles to do the job, as like wallpaaper the colours can vary in different manufacturing batches.
measure each wall and measure as a whole i.e. without deducting window size etc. the tile place will work it out for you.
Most tile wholesalers will take back any full unopened boxes, and you need to keep a few spare tiles.
I use tubs of ready mixed tile adhesive which contains anti mildew substance. get tile n grout combined.
Its more expensive, but theres no waste and no mess.
It also allows you to just do a small area if you only have a spare hour.
It is always the same consistancy, so easier to apply.
use a small pointing trowel to get out of tub, and a proper tile float with serated edge for allowing the exact amount on wall at all times, its fool proof.!
Also use the plastic tile spacers, ( little plastic cross shapes)
this ensures even spacing, again foolproof !
Use the rounded edging strips for around window reveal (silver or gold to match taps)
Before starting, fit a straight wooden batten to the wall as a straight edge. simply nail one end, put a spirit level on it and nail the other end when exactly level, and one in the middle
( leave nails quarter inch proud, so removing is easy ! )
If there is a border tile, it is a good idea to start border on top of batton.
Next check level of bath, ensure edge against wall is level, if not remove panel and adjust feet accordingly until level
NEVER start tiling on floor, it is never level !
Best investment buy tile cutting machine with water - lubricated wheel. Brilliant ! Always use guard, or lose a finger!

An old breakfast cereal box is useful to make a template of awkward bits like waste pipe for loo etc.
Dont do too much at once, or it becomes a chore instead of a pleasure !
Keep checking with a spirit level !
When grouting, use a piece of wood batton and when dry use the corners to really scrape as much grout out of cracks as you can, it looks really professional, much more so than the way most "professionals" do it !
Lastly use old towels to really buff up tiles to a lovely shine.
leave everything spotlessly clean, or mrs. will forget all about your efforts and nag you to death!
Get some new Egyption Cotton towels off tv shopping channel, only a fraction of high street price!

If tiling floor, first make floor level with marine plywood sheets
do a "dry-run" of a row of tiles, and position full tile in middle so edges are same size cuts at all 4 sides of room, looks really professional,
Lie back in a nice hot bath and admire your handy work !
I hate diy, but this is easy if you take your time and do it properly !
