Excellent Tiling Book

by Book lover from Lexington, KY USA on 2008-01-05
First let me explain this very lengthy review by saying that I want readers to understand that this book is, by NO means, just a book of pictures, as one reviewer complained. If you're looking for inspiration AND information, this is the book for you. It contains plenty of photographs of tiles of all types used in a full range of settings and uses. It is also full of instructions and details, not just about how to install tile properly, but also how to prep the area where you intend to install it, based on the type of wall, flooring, subflooring, etc., and what you might have to add to your existing floor or wall, based on what's already there. It also contains instructions for removing sinks and commodes before tile installation, removing baseboards, old vinyl, and other such things. It includes basic tile info, from pictures of the basic sizes and shapes of tile, to "tile lingo," with pictures of all the different trim and specialty tile for corners, edges, etc., so you know what to look for and ask for when you're tile shopping, based on your intended installation area. It also has descriptions of tile types - ceramic, porcelain, stone, glass, terra-cotta, tile borders, painted tile and mosaic tile.It also contains photographs, descriptions and instructions for use of a wide range of tools you'll need for tiling, both for installation and finish work, as well as tips for making other helpful tools, and gear you'll need to make yourself more comfortable while working. The book contains diagrams for laying out tile, depending on whether you plan to install tile squarely or diagonally, and whether your room is square, out-of-square, or L-shaped.Besides full preparation information for the areas of installation listed below, it includes good instructions on the noted subjects:- floor: strengthening the subfloor, patching concrete, installing underlayment - wall: extending outlets, removing baseboards, patching drywall or plaster, repairing holes, and installing new drywall - kitchen countertop: strengthening cabinets and countertops, making and supporting a sink cutout - tub or shower: removing old tile, dealing with existing plumbing, investigating water damage - shower: designing a shower enclosure, installing a prefab shower pan or installing your own mortar-bed shower floor, building the shower curb, installing soap dishes, shower seats, grab bars, etc. - tub: framing and tiling tubs, including floor framing support and platform framingIt also includes instructions for tiling fireplace surrounds and hearths, woodstove surrounds and hearths (including types of suitable tile), range hoods, stairs, pool decks, and existing exterior concrete (and how to build a new concrete base if you don't have one already). For every area of installation it covers, it shows stunning design ideas that make you want to go tile shopping.AND, last but not least, it has (1) a section on tile maintenance, cleaning and repair; (2) a section on installation specifications for tile over concrete slabs, for wood subflooring, for radiant heat, and for tile walls; (3) a resource guide; (4) a glossary; and (5) a nice index.I checked out this book from the library, and after one look through it, I knew I wanted it on my bookshelf. I am certain that it will tell me everything I need to know to prepare for and complete my upcoming tiling projects. Thank you, Creative Homeowner, for an excellent book.

waste of money

by Larry Mages from Los Angeles on 2007-12-22
This book was worthless and a waste of my money. I do not recommend this book to anyone!! It was mostly pictures. How is a book of photo's with out any real information claim that it is the utlimate guide to ceramic tile and stone. This book was less useful than any magazine with ideas about ceramic tile and stone.

Very beginner helpful

by rs sherex from Small town, OK on 2007-07-10
Never having installed tiling before, we felt it necessary to get so info before we started. Book seems to cover almost everything we needed. Still had a few questions about how to cut square holes in the middle of the tiles, how to correctly use nippers. Also needed to talk more about the current types of adhesives avail now. Overall helpful book and informative for the beginner.

Good overview, excellent examples and illustrations

by Mary B. from Spooner, WI on 2010-05-14
Angelica Pozo offers a thorough overview of the process of making and installing handmade tiles. She covers the process from beginning to end, explaining the basics of each step very well. There are lots of photos -- and in good quality -- to follow each step. The book covers how to avoid common tile problems, such as warping. Pozo's techniques are not always dependent on having lots of equipment to make tiles. She shows how to make tiles using a rolling pin, as well as on a slab roller. Bullnose tile can be made with an extruder or by bending the clay over wood forms. Pozo also describes mosaic installation, using a detailed numbering system. If you are interested in making and installing tile, Pozo's book is a place to start.

Tiles

by Ruby Crayola from Okinawa, Japan on 2009-03-03
I have always intended to create a patio wall, tiled and designed by myself...with additional help from my husband. This book is going to be a fantastic resource for this project. Excellent pictures and written directions make this book perfect for inspiration and learning the technique of tiling. I appreciate the fact that this book does not get too caught up in the technicalities of tile making, but rather simplifies the process.

artist as artisan

by John Feesey from British Columbia,Canada on 2008-12-18
The essential basics of preparing very low fire raw manufactured moist clay into a tile and the absolute basics of glaze/ slip decoration styles, with a few projects to illustrate potential in the above . The author then goes on to describe simple framing, hanging, mounting projects. In a short time the author wants to quickly transition you from a visual artist into a sculptural artisan. She certainly knows her onions, and the book is aiming at being concise ,which this is.It has led me -a traditional potter into successfully fabricating my own tile.I can't believe the quality of color photos can be bought in a quality bound hardcover at this price. She gets my vote in having the text descriptions of each process accompanied with the photos of same on the same page.My feeling is while good,it is too narrow a course in decorating and glaze treatment to be my sole guide on the making and decoration of handmade tile, but its the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Description

Now in paperback, here is the definitive, definitely inspiring work for homeowners and designers alike. Author Jill Herbers surveys the use of tile in such conventional settings as kitchens and baths, then ventures into less traditional locations like living rooms, foyers, staircases, and home offices. Outdoors, tiles are both beautiful and functional in courtyards, fountains, gardens, and on exterior walls. Breathtaking full-color photographs showcase this beautiful and versatile craft. Herbers explores the use of tiles through history and as art, culture, and style, examining such topics as terra-cotta, the secret life of glazes, showroom survival, and tiling on a budget. An exhaustive, completely revised source guide provides contact information for artists, showrooms, designers, associations, and "tile experiences," to name just a few.

Hand-painted, glazed, carved, sculpted, machine-stamped--tiles add color, pattern, and texture to both interior and exterior settings. With brightly colored photos and well-written text, Tile traces the history of the medium through various periods and cultures, explains the various types and their manufacture, and offers ideas for utilizing tile in today's homes. And the material needn't be limited to kitchens and baths; there are plenty of suggestions for tiling areas such as stairways, halls, fireplaces, outdoor entryways, pools, and even furnishings.

The Best Book on Tile You Can Buy

by from on 2000-07-22
This book has it all--tile in art, history, and all the cultures of the world; tile in living rooms, entryways, backyards, and around picture frames; everything on mosaics, glazes, and tilemaking; how to choose it and use it; where to find it. If you didn't love tile before you saw this book, you will. The book is also the most beautiful--it is itself a work of art. The information is fascinating, the writing entertaining. The 40-page resource section is invaluable. I've seen all the books on tile--if you get only one book, make sure it's this one.

Very Helpful

Used this book for the first time doing tile work. Book looks a little old, but covers everything you need to know. The work I did came out nicely and I am very satisfied.

Very Disappointed

by Sonya from Dallas, TX on 2005-11-23
I did not see a review on this book on Amazon, so I bought it used through one of the other Amazon retailers. I am so glad I did not spend much money on this book.I was very disappointed in this book. The book was almost entirely illustrations. The only pictures in this book were on the first page of each chapter and even that was a letdown. In chapter 3, there a photographs of three floor designs, one with a set-in square. Nowhere in the chapter did they tell you how to make that design, just generally info on laying out the design you want.I gave it 2 stars for the information, but feel it would have been a really good book with actual pictures of the steps. In these types of projects, pictures are much better than diagrams for me. For a great guide on laying tile that INCLUDES photos, I recommend Working with Tile by Tom and Lane Meehan. It is a Taunton's "Build Like a Pro" series.

A well rounded guide to tilemaking

by YamiTami from on 2010-08-17
First just let me say that this book doesn't deserve any of the less than four stars reviews. You'll notice that if you read said reviews they ALL say that the reason for fewer stars is a lack of step by step projects. I'll never get why some people can't understand that not every art book falls into that one narrow category. This book teaches techniques, and thus is FAR more useful than ANY book which only teaches projects. Not that I have anything against project-centric books--they are a great stepping stone for the beginner--but tilemaking goes a bit beyond a casual hobby in the setup required. If you get a project book for handmade tiles then you're wasting your money. The instruction in this book is very well laid out and is very clear. There are tons of pictures of steps, tools, and so on, so it will work for both instruction based and visual based learners. It covers the whole range of tilemaking, from the basic supplies to different techniques to how to make various tools. It also features dozens of images of finished works, from traditional inlaid slip floors to the heavily cow themed bathroom to three dimensional sculptures of tiled sofas. The number and variety of these examples makes for great inspiration material. All in all, if you're planning to do anything in the realm of handmade tiles this is the place to start.

Beautiful book, but hard to read

by ACArtisan from on 2010-08-06
The many tile examples included in this book are generally well chosen, and are easy to see, which satisfies my main expectations. I find it fun and inspiring, and like the way the book is organized. The only complaint I have is that 6 point type is much too small for book text, and even captions, which is mostly what the text in this book consists of. If you want to read the book and not just look at the images, be prepared for eye strain!

Very Pleased...

by C. Nemanich from Nashville, TN United States on 2006-08-21
This is a wonderful book. The scope of this book is wide, including very early to modern ceramic tile designs. I am very interested in tile design and use many styles of graphics in my own work. This book gives me lots of ideas from which to draw to create my own designs and some knowledge of the origin of my favorite styles. If you appreciate lovely tile work and have an interest in how, when and why different styles were developed, this is a book for you.
