Glass Mosaic Tile Art: What exactly is Grout?

Ever wonder what grout actually is? As a mosaic artist, you should. Yes, it is cement, but what is cement? Even if you could not care less, as a mosaic artist, who must understand the materials used in their work. Therefore, we will find out exactly what is concrete.

Portland cement is the most common type of cement. Did you know that Portland cement is a generic type of cement, not a business name? Many companies different cement are Portland cement. Aspdin Jose, a bricklayer in England, invented and patented Portland cement in 1824. He called it "Portland" cement because it resembled the limestone of the Isle of Portland (4.5 miles long by 1.5 mile wide limestone peninsula extends to the English Channel). Heat a crude mixture of crushed limestone and clay in his kitchen. The resulting mixture hardens after adding water.

While that may contain small amounts of various elements, concrete has four basic components: calcium, silicon, aluminum and iron. These elements are commonly found in limestone (source of calcium), clay and sand (silica source, aluminum and iron). raw chunks of these ingredients are crushed and steps to get the right mixture (limestone is far the main ingredient). The shredded materials are then heated to over 2500 degrees (that's hot!). The extreme heat causes a chemical reaction and becomes the calcium silicate material. The resulting material is called "clinker." The clinker is cooled, crushed and made into a fine powder. The gray powder, which we know as Portland cement is so fine that one pound of cement contains more than 100 billion of grain, which is fine enough to pass through a sieve that can hold the water. That's it! Portland Cement end can pass through a fine sieve, but water can not. Is not that amazing? So, now we know what really is cement, the next question is why and how does it hardens when water is applied?

Cement hardens due to the "hydration", a chemical reaction caused by water that results in a new compound. The reaction forms chemical bonds with water molecules called "hydrates." The calcium silicates react to the release of calcium and hydroxide ions. When the reaction process the material is saturated, the crystallized calcium hydroxide. Al same time, forms of calcium silicate hydrate. As time goes on, the calcium silicate hydrate increases (ie, the cement hardens) and the process continues until no more water molecules and the United Nations compound hydrated. The resulting substance is rock hard cement.

Grout adds strength to the tile, keeps dirt, and helps protect the mosaic, especially those outdoor projects. Grout is not a sticker, so do not try to adhere to the founding of the mosaic tesserae, using grout.

Remember, making mosaic art is easy. You can do it. Yes, you can!

You may contact cement be used to set the grid tiles to a piece of plywood?

Contact cement will not work. It adheres to surfaces, but need something a little heavier physically for it. Construction adhesive would be a good option. Allow boxes to move a little if package before it is dry, but this might be a good thing. Will be held to the wood once established.
