Glass Mosaic Tile Art: Mixing Grout

Make wonderful art glass mosaic tile is easy! Let me show you how.

The amount the grout for your mosaic project depends on two basic variables: 1) the size of the piece, and 2) the width of your joints. Obviously, smaller joints require less grout. It is important to mix more than you think you need to ensure that no one is left out. This is especially true when using colored grout to ensure color consistency unless you intend your piece to have varying shades of grout.

If you have a brand new box of grout, you probably use only a small part of it. Do not throw the whole picture in a bucket of water! If this is the first time a mosaic of injection, to put what you think is enough in the mixing bowl and then add at least half that amount (ie, a mixture of about 1.5 times as much as you think you need). When you're finished grouting, observe how much pull, so I can better estimate the amount you need for your next project. (You'll learn from my eBook the approximate amount of grout that needs for your project.)

The first rule of mixing grout is read and follow safety precautions on the bag and then read and follow label instructions. After read the label of the bag, go somewhere away from your mosaic to not splash wet grout on it while the mixture (for example, go outside or the opposite end of garage). Scoop enough grout powder into the mixing vessel. Gradually add small amounts of water and mix with a paint stirring stick. Some brands of mouthpiece are "polymer modified print, which means acrylic latex has been added to the powder. If the grout already contains the additive, says the bag easy to read, " polymer modified "or similar words. If the grout does not contain the additive, then you can choose to mix the grout with a mixture of water instead. As noted in the eBook, I never bother adding acrylic latex for my indoor mosaics. normal water jets work well for me.

Add small amounts of water at once and mix well. Do not pour in the water all at once. Do not make the grout too runny by adding too much water. Take your time and mixing in a little water at a time. When it is almost the right consistency, just a spoonful of water can be too. So, take your time.

Do not grout too runny. This is important, so let's put it together again, "Do not make the grout too runny." Use thick, pasty grout because is easier to clean, without digging in the joints. The technical reason for not doing what is leaking too much water makes the grout weaker and more susceptible to staining. Therefore, thicker is better. My favorite consistency is like thick toothpaste or cookie dough (which is thick toothpaste, toothpaste non-liquid). Some books say to make it as a pudding or mayonnaise, but that is too thin for me.

After mixing the grout, I use paint stirring stick to pick up some and keep it on the container. If drips off the stick in the container, then it is too fine. I like what remains in place on the stick and not fall or collapse.

If you accidentally poured too much water and make the grout too runny, just add a little more grout powder to thicken it. Add just a teaspoon of milk at a time. A small amount of powdered milk can switch to drip just right. If you add grout too much, too thick and then have to add a few drops of water to dilute. You will be caught in an endless loop of adding grout to thicken, then add water to dilute it. Therefore, add small quantities. After the grout work first, get an idea of what much to add, so it will be easier next time you do this.

When you get the right consistency, thoroughly mix the grout to ensure no of dust and smooth. I like cleaning the sides of the container with the paint stirring stick to all the dust off the sides. I do not like the unmixed powder anywhere in the container.
