Good overview, excellent examples and illustrations

Angelica Pozo offers a thorough overview of the process of making and installing handmade tiles. She covers the process from beginning to end, explaining the basics of each step very well. There are lots of photos -- and in good quality -- to follow each step. The book covers how to avoid common tile problems, such as warping. Pozo's techniques are not always dependent on having lots of equipment to make tiles. She shows how to make tiles using a rolling pin, as well as on a slab roller. Bullnose tile can be made with an extruder or by bending the clay over wood forms. Pozo also describes mosaic installation, using a detailed numbering system. If you are interested in making and installing tile, Pozo's book is a place to start.

I have always intended to create a patio wall, tiled and designed by myself...with additional help from my husband. This book is going to be a fantastic resource for this project. Excellent pictures and written directions make this book perfect for inspiration and learning the technique of tiling. I appreciate the fact that this book does not get too caught up in the technicalities of tile making, but rather simplifies the process.

The essential basics of preparing very low fire raw manufactured moist clay into a tile and the absolute basics of glaze/ slip decoration styles, with a few projects to illustrate potential in the above . The author then goes on to describe simple framing, hanging, mounting projects. In a short time the author wants to quickly transition you from a visual artist into a sculptural artisan. She certainly knows her onions, and the book is aiming at being concise ,which this is.It has led me -a traditional potter into successfully fabricating my own tile.I can't believe the quality of color photos can be bought in a quality bound hardcover at this price. She gets my vote in having the text descriptions of each process accompanied with the photos of same on the same page.My feeling is while good,it is too narrow a course in decorating and glaze treatment to be my sole guide on the making and decoration of handmade tile,but its the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Tiler for many Years--- BUILDING a SHOWER PAN

Very Disappointed

I did not see a review on this book on Amazon, so I bought it used through one of the other Amazon retailers. I am so glad I did not spend much money on this book.I was very disappointed in this book. The book was almost entirely illustrations. The only pictures in this book were on the first page of each chapter and even that was a letdown. In chapter 3, there a photographs of three floor designs, one with a set-in square. Nowhere in the chapter did they tell you how to make that design, just generally info on laying out the design you want.I gave it 2 stars for the information, but feel it would have been a really good book with actual pictures of the steps. In these types of projects, pictures are much better than diagrams for me. For a great guide on laying tile that INCLUDES photos, I recommend Working with Tile by Tom and Lane Meehan. It is a Taunton's "Build Like a Pro" series.

First let me explain this very lengthy review by saying that I want readers to understand that this book is, by NO means, just a book of pictures, as one reviewer complained. If you're looking for inspiration AND information, this is the book for you. It contains plenty of photographs of tiles of all types used in a full range of settings and uses. It is also full of instructions and details, not just about how to install tile properly, but also how to prep the area where you intend to install it, based on the type of wall, flooring, subflooring, etc., and what you might have to add to your existing floor or wall, based on what's already there. It also contains instructions for removing sinks and commodes before tile installation, removing baseboards, old vinyl, and other such things.It includes basic tile info, from pictures of the basic sizes and shapes of tile, to "tile lingo," with pictures of all the different trim and specialty tile for corners, edges, etc., so you know what to look for and ask for when you're tile shopping, based on your intended installation area. waste of money

This book was worthless and a waste of my money. I do not recommend this book to anyone!! It was mostly pictures. How is a book of photo's with out any real information claim that it is the utlimate guide to ceramic tile and stone. This book was less useful than any magazine with ideas about ceramic tile and stone.

Very beginner helpful

Never having installed tiling before, we felt it necessary to get so info before we started. Book seems to cover almost everything we needed. Still had a few questions about how to cut square holes in the middle of the tiles, how to correctly use nippers. Also needed to talk more about the current types of adhesives avail now. Overall helpful book and informative for the beginner.

This is a wonderful book. The scope of this book is wide, including very early to modern ceramic tile designs. I am very interested in tile design and use many styles of graphics in my own work. This book gives me lots of ideas from which to draw to create my own designs and some knowledge of the origin of my favorite styles. If you appreciate lovely tile work and have an interest in how, when and why different styles were developed, this is a book for you.

Excellent How-to book on Advanced Tile Making

This book contains excellent how-to information on everything from screen printing onto tiles, to mold-making, to decorating possibilities like stenciling, painting, and working with slips.The finished samples shown are not as inspirational as, say, Frank Giorgini's "Handmade Tiles" samples, but they show the possible results of the techniques outlined in the book and are nice.Excellent resource for tile makers, and would make a pretty good textbook for a tile class.

Tile Your World a little disappointing

I ordered this book on the strength of the positive reviews. I'm doing an outside deck with expensive porcelein tiles, so I thought I'd read a manual. I've done tiling before and the jobs have come out fine and get compliments and have never cracked or popped a tile. I'm a little slow, but I don't pay myself by the hour.So I wanted to know more about the actual process of tiling. Not the history of tile or the trade. And I know now John loves his mortar bed, but they invented backer booard to make tiling more accessible and that's why I'm reading the book.. I look at the pictures of people somehow doing a mortar bed in a big room, and only think, "yeah, right. That's an art and I'll never do that". I'm not doing a bathroom, so I'm not grading that portion of the book. I did carefully read every word up to that point in the book.I thought the description of how to layout tile and snap chalk lines was very good. The discussion of isolation was also good, how you can make your tile job more resistant to changes to the substrate. What I didn't find was much on how to actually put the thin set down, when to back butter tiles, why you pick a trowel notch size (although John says he doesn't see the need for much beyond 1/4-3/8, he doesn't ever explain how to figure out what you should use from first principles), what are some tricks for swiping the thinset (I've always used straight trowel movement but the pictures show arcs), how you see your chalk lines after you've smeared over them with thinset, do you then scrape up all thinset right up to edge of placed tile(s)? I was also looking for some guidance on how to work out of multiple boxes... I've only done near identical tiles, and now I have tiles that are mixed and I don't know how to work out of multiple boxes or whether I should literally lay out 100% of the tiles and move them around by sight and then carefully stack them to the side...And a real back breaker for me... even though everything I've seen or read (or done) says you hold the trowel at a 45 deg angle when making the ridges, John says 90 deg. Whew! Is that why he doesn't use a big notch on big tiles? He gets twice the thickness at 90 deg? If you do this, do you pull the trowel? This is so different than even the back of the thinset bags, it begged an explanation.So the bood gives some good information on design and is worthwhile for that, but the stuff John probably forgot is harder for amateurs (if you can do a mortar bed, actually placing tiles must be like getting dressed) doesn't get covered in enough detail. Basically the problems you're dealing with when you out on your knees with boxes of tile piled about.

Black and white photos??...

I finally recieved this item. It was damaged in transit (cover bent), but I overlooked this complaint for a while until I opened the book. "Tile Your World" was recommended to me for my project, so this is why I purchased it. But when I saw the bulk of black-and-white photos that you can hardly see (which were also small), I then wondered "is this for real?". It is awful-- only the finished jobs are in color. NO how-to book should have small instructional photos in black-and-white, and only invest in putting the finished product in color!!! If you are a new DIYer, please keep this in mind if you order this item. I don't know if I will keep this book-- especially if I can't see exactly what I need to do. I can read all the content I want, but if I can't match it to the photos, it becomes useless to me (and quite a stressful project).

THE best bath renovation book for the DIY'r!!

If you're getting ready to do a bathroom renovation that includes putting in a new shower, you NEED this book. We are not new to major home renovation projects and I have done lots of tiling projects in the past, but this is our first shower build from the floor up. This book is not just about how to schlep mud on a wall and make the tile look pretty, but more importantly it goes into considerable detail about the crucial part - what's underneath and how to properly construct it. I've learned with each successive project that you have to think in terms of "3 steps down the road" - step A has to be done a certain way, otherwise later on when tackling step C or D, you run into problems. This book does just that. It's not your typical bathroom book (which are usually nothing more than a photo gallery of nice bathrooms telling you to hire a contractor to do the project). This book is for those of us who enjoy working with our hands and are up to a good challenge. The step-by-step instructions include lots of pictures and details even which order to tile the curb, niche, bench, etc. And yes, it also includes "pretty pictures" for inspiration!!

Great book

I purchased this book to try and advoid the pitfalls that would be encountered from doing a complete walk in tile shower and floor for a bathroom. I am happy to say that with the help of the book and the on line forums I easily accomplished the task with outstanding results. The guy installing the glass shower doors even said the job was better than most professionals he had to follow up. I guess that says a bit about the job but also about the info in the book. BTW - I had never done a tile job in my life up to this point so that is saying something.

Very Dissapointing

This book was pretty disappointing. After spending $24 for what I thought was going to be an authoritative book from a well respected expert on the art of tile setting, I find myself browsing other books while I'm at Home Depot to get the information I need. In particular there is absolutely no mention of how cutting and setting stone tiles is different than ceramic. No mention of using epoxy to set tiles with resin on the back or use of epoxy for anything. No mention of design issues like what size tile or what layout is best for small or large rooms, what size grout joints look best with what types and sizes of tile. He has these cute sections about how cool it is to be a tile setter all over the book which bugs me since that space in the book could have been used to give real information. As an example he has a section on making u-cuts in floor tiles. He never actually tells you how to make a u-cut, just how great you'll feel when you master this skill.I'm guessing the reason this book has so many great reviews here is that the people that hang out in his online forum buy the book and enjoy his cute little stories and write a glowing review. They don't care about the lack of detail in the book because they can get it from the online forum. But for $24 I shouldn't have to then go to an online forum or sneak peeks at other books while at the store for the information I need, it should all be in the BOOK!From looking at other tile books at Home Depot, either the Stanley (that's pretty sad) or Taunton book would be better choices for people who actually want to learn how to set tile.
