How do I prepare a concrete floor before installing tile myself?

I'm pulling up the old tiles fireplace splinters from my home in my basement. It is a cement floor below. Do I have to get all the old fast departed before applying the new Quick-set of the new tiles? If so, how do I remove it? I've been using a hammer and chisel to remove the old tiles, but the old Quick-set is not really with it. Thanks! Also, there are nails in the concrete itself is holding down the Strip due to the carpet. They stay until approximately 3 / 16 - 1 / 4 inches. I can not get or hammer them in Can I apply the new Quick-set against them? If not, how can I get rid of them?

it is necessary to obtain the ground as level as possible .. therefore it is necessary to remove lumps and bumps age .. a sharp chisel and a lump hammer works for me

Is it possible to install tile floors in an old house with a cement floor that is uneven?

I bought an old place that started as a small hut in the desert and the previous owners added a couple of times until the house was a large living room and bedroom big. She is old vinyl (?) Tile that needs replacing. I really want to replace it with real tile, but I need to know if it is still possible, because the word itself is very uneven. Or will I have to settle for vinyl? Any advice appriciated! Thank you.
