Is installing ceramic floor tile hard?

Thinking about updating 2 small bathrooms. Did you learn anything when you did your first installation that made it easier the second time if you did it again? What did you consider the hardest part. Thanks for any input!

Laying tile is actually pretty easy to do and kind of fun too. I am in my first house and I have tiled the kitchen floor, the kitchen counters, next to the front door, and in my bay window (keeps the cats from destroying it). You definitely want to use a type of cement backer board that you can get in home depot and lowes. I like the one that is premarked with scoring lines and screw spots myself. The name escapes me at the moment. For about $80 you can get a cheap tile saw that works just fine for smaller tiles. Lay them out beforehand to figure out exactly where to cut them to make the layout look its best. Lowes sells special spacers that are easy to remove after the thinset dries. They are disks with a straight spacer on one side and a t spacer on the other. Don't mix the thinset/grout in the house! It creates a huge cloud of nasty dust. Also, I found that the thinset instructions called for too much water, so start with a lot less and add more as you need it. It should be the consistency of a thick milkshake. And use a powerful drill!! It's really an easy project to do yourself. Good luck.

how to install floor tile in a diamond pattern?

I'm installing 13x13 floor tile on a slab. Any tips on how to do it right

If your not overly familiar with doing tile a diagonal isn t the easiest to start on.
Lay out and proper tools are a big help in your preplanning. Right size trowel and large enough wet saw and had cutter is a must.
Get the longest straight site line and split the room in 1/2 with a chalk line. Lay tile back to the wall and figure the size of pc(pcs) you need. You can cut a few of these pcs as a starting point. Knowing you split the room you should be equal when you get to the other side.
A perfect straight edge will help keep your lines straight. Use this on all sides as you build out from that wall and lay as though your doing a straight lay just that your on a 45 degree.
Or if you are doing an open ended area , you can cut several tiles in 1/2 and work back. A bit trickier but overall look is better. Don t cut tiles directly in 1/2, you must cut just off center if this is a starting point. Very hard to do and takes experience.
