Can I install ceramic tile directly to a cement block wall in the basement?

I'm building a shower in the basement of 50 years of age in Michigan. I'm using cement board (base plates) for the sides that I have framed in. The back of the shower is the existing concrete block wall. Can I apply the mortar and tile cement block wall as you would for a cement slab? Will there be problems with it smelly? The wall will be cold during the winter.
