Install Tile Flooring

How difficult is it for a 1st timer to take out crappy linoleum flooring and install tile in the kitchen?

We got an offer accepted on a great colonial (bank owned) but it needs updating throughout the home. The first thing I want to do is take out the gross linoleum flooring in the kitchen that looks like it came with the house back in '66. Underneath is wood (not hardwood). How difficult is this process for someone who's never done it before. We want to install tile. The kind that is rough like stone.
Oh God. Yea, I think we'll have it done professionally!

Try removing the linoleum. I've done it twice, in two different houses, and found that it was very easy to remove the linoleum. The linoleum is usually only "glued" to the underlayment around the perimeter and at the seams. Other than that it will lift right off. You absolutely do not want to lay tiles over a linoleum floor unless you first either remove the linoleum or lay a new underlayment, such as concrete backer board, over the linoleum. And laying a new underlayment will create more problems with the installation inasmuch as you are raising the level of the new floor. This could even create problems if you have to replace a built in diswasher or cabinet or other appliance.
