How to demo (remove) counter tops for granite installation?
we got a bid for granite installation in our kitchen and 2 bathrooms. Right now there is tile in all 3 rooms. Any tips for removing the old tile ourselves to save about $700 bucks? How do you protect the cabinets that we want to keep. In addition, there is a tile backsplash that we would like to keep in tact so any suggestions would be helpful.

The tile countertops are most likely laid over a substrate that is attached to the cabinets with screws. Look inside the cabinets at the underside of the top and you should see screws in each corner. Remove all of these and the top should come off. You may have to wrestle with it if it's grouted to the backsplash. Warning, it will be heavy.
As for the backsplash, this may be a different story. The tile is probably applied to the wall. You may either have to leave it up, and hope the granite covers the joint, or you may need a 4" granite splash that will butt up to the tile on the wall. Hope this helps.
