If you are lucky enough to find hardwood floors hidden under carpet tired, you may feel like wood covering up. That's understandable, because of renovation refinishing the floors you think an impossible task.

Wood floors are a common feature in homes until the 1960s. Prior to that, that wall to-wall carpet was considered a luxury upgrade. Since the 1970s, most homes had wall to wall carpet in the room almost everyone. But tastes change, and during the past two decades, wood floors have again become fashionable and desirable.

Often when I am talking to someone on the location of the houses, they wonder if refinishing wood floors is something they can do themselves. Unless the person has a reason physics by which they can not usually say yes. However, I also remind them that redo hardwood floors takes a great deal of time, sweat and elbow grease.

As a general rule, the floors of fifty square feet or less, be sanded by hand, but for any plant larger than that, rent or buy small orbital sander. Everything you need to do it yourself is available at your local hardware store. You can buy an electric sander pretty good today for under $ 100, which may be a good investment, especially if you're planning to work at home on a regular basis.

The first layer is removed is often a wax layer thick, followed by a layer of varnish or polyurethane. A commercial heavy duty wax stripper can remove the wax, then a lacquer thinner or acetone can be cleaned to prepare the wood for the next step.

If there is a carpet of nails or nails into pieces of old wood, remove first. The remnants of a nail can break sandpaper, sanding damage, pad and cause serious damage to the palm of your hand, so check carefully to ensure that all traces of tacks and nails are gone before you start sanding.

Fill all nail holes with quality wood filler, matching the color as closely as possible, and let dry. Then you're ready to start sanding the floor with 220-grit sandpaper, either by hand or with a sander.

When you are finished sanding, clean the whole floor with a damp cloth to remove sanding dust as possible. Damp cloths work better than vacuum cleaners. Let the soil dry and then wipe again with the tack cloth, a resin-impregnated cloth to pick up fine dust particles. Again, your local hardware store will have what you need.

After the floor is as clean as you can get, apply three coats of polyurethane with a pound of paint, allowing each coat to dry completely, lightly sanded with 220 grit sandpaper - and wiping the floor with a damp cloth and a cloth between coats tactic. If you prefer an antique finish, use a 50/50 mixture linseed oil and mineral spirits and wax the floors with beeswax or paste wax. Take caution with the mixture of chemicals and rags, as they may catch fire.

You can refinish hardwood floors yourself. It just takes time and effort - and a good set of knee pads would not hurt, either! Once finished, you'll have a beautiful floor to be proud and ready for the next "do it yourself" project - perhaps the next room, with floors wood.

This is in my work, the floor is painted a light brown, and it has the texture of sand, broken mop and leave lint all over the floor. It is the first room guests see when entering the building, so you need to look good. We have runners for walkways, but the entire floor should be cleaned from time to time, and I have found a good way to do it.
