Ceramic Or Porcelain Tile

Porcelain or Ceramic Tile?

I have had Ceramic flooring before but not Porcelain. I am in the process of remodeling my kitchen and would like to know if you think porcelain is as superior to ceramic as they claim. Also thoughts of hardwood flooring in a kitchen are welcome.

Hi there!

As far as superiority goes, it really depends. In many ways, porcelain is the better choice for anywhere there is going to be moisture, like a kitchen. Porcelain is literally impervious to moisture - it's moisture absorption rate is less than 0.5% of the weight of each tile. That's why it's used in bathrooms and laundry areas to such a great degree. In addition to being moisture proof, they are far less likely to be stained from spills. This could be a compelling reason to choose them for a kitchen installation. Also, you can buy a matte finish porcelain as opposed to a polished tile (which is a good idea if you want to ensure slip-resistance) in as many colors as standard ceramic tile.

You can either choose a full-body porcelain tile, or glazed porcelain. Full-body porcelain means that the color of the tile runs all the way through. Glazed means that the color is on the surface only. There are some price gaps here which you may want to explore further with your seller.

One thing to keep in mind is that porcelain is very, very hard. This is great for long-term durability. But, it means that the tiles are a bit more challenging to cut. With the right equipment (and experience) this is not a huge hurdle, but it's something to keep in mind.

Another thing to keep in mind is the PEI rating of your chosen tile. This rating is guide to follow as far as how durable the tile is relative to how much traffic it is likely to see. I've attached a link to an article which shows what each rating means. Generally speaking for a kitchen installation, a PEI3 rating is pretty safe. Ask your seller about ratings and choose accordingly.

PS - although hardwood in kitchens is a popular choice, it can be risky to lay hardwood floors in an area which is common for spills. Keeping hardwood flooring away from moisture is vital to the success of keeping them looking as good as they do when they're first installed. So, if you do decide to go with hardwood, be prepared to be extra vigilant when it comes to taking care of them.

Happy floor hunting!
