Black grout ! Ewww.?

I just bought a house and the floor is done in ceramic tile (white and light grey) with black grout between the joints. I have it throughout the kitchen, diningroom, entry, 2 bathrooms, hallway and laundryroom. What can I do to lighten it up?

You ask a really good question. From my experience, I can only think of three possible solutions - which all involve a little labor. The first option would consist of removing the grout (they make special tools for this job) and re-grouting the room with a different color. Your second option (which I have never seen on a large scale) consists of buying an enamel grout paint and applying the paint to the grout using a small toothbrush. In order to do the job right - remember to break down any sealant using an acid wash. After the paint has set up, remove excess with a sponge and re-seal. Your third option - which I am not certain would work as well as the others - consists of using a heavy acid wash. At best, I would think the acid would remove any buildup on the grout - that may effect coloring - thus lightening the grout slightly. My preferred method would probably be the first - even though you always run the risk of damaging the tile.
